What is narration?

Narration is an important component of this subject. It is a way for the child to develop their understanding and storytelling skills. The process is simple: the child tells you what they have just heard or read. If first grade, you begin to ask the child to summarize the plots of short simple stories. Read the child the story, close the book, and ask, "What was the story about?" Encourage the child to answer in complete sentences. Write down the child's narration and then read it back. As their writing capabilities increase, transition them over to writing out narrations on their own. Narration lets you know how much a child retains and understands. it also develops vocabulary and powers of expression, and lays the foundation for good writing later on.
